Information about this painting:
This beautiful painting perfectly shows the mix of reality, imagination, and skill that early Netherlandish art is known for. It illustrates a scene from the legend of Saint George: dressed in black armor, he pins a dragon to the ground with his lance. On the left, Princess Cleodolinda—who was supposed to be sacrificed to the dragon—kneels in elegant clothing. Although Saint George was a Roman soldier from 3rd-century Cappadocia, the artist has set the scene in what looks like the Belgian countryside of the time.
The background shows a series of rolling hills leading to a walled city, surrounded by water and topped with a castle on a tall, dramatic mountain. Though clearly imagined, the scene is painted with incredible detail and realism—so much so that some believe the artist may have used a magnifying glass.
The way light reflects off George’s armor and the dragon’s scales shows the influence of Jan van Eyck. The style also resembles the detailed illustrations found in illuminated manuscripts, suggesting it’s an early work. The panel may have once been part of a larger piece, possibly a diptych, and was likely used for private prayer.
