Information about the painting:
Cupid is trying to stop a rolling wheel, while the wind blows his clothing. The scene feels dark and somber, with cloudy skies and a skull hanging from a tree.
This painting is unusual for Titian. He normally only used a monochrome style to imitate sculpture within colorful paintings. But this work is entirely in shades of gray, painted with quick, loose brushstrokes.
It may have been used as a cover (called a timpano) for a portrait. Around 1500 in Venice, it was common to pair portraits with symbolic paintings. This allegory might reflect the personality, status, or beliefs of the person in the portrait. Based on the symbols—Cupid, the wheel, and the skull—scholars have suggested different meanings. One idea is that the image shows how love plays a central role in life and brings sweetness to time, even though time ultimately leads to death.
